The Simplicity Foundation was pleased to able to donate $500,000 to Kiwi charities again this year, as part of its Christmas Giving programme.

After a challenging few years, 2023 was unfortunately no different, as people face the increasing cost of living.

"These donations are targeted at those New Zealanders who are most in need, at what can be a stressful time of year", says Simplicity Managing Director, Sam Stubbs. "As well as supporting Kiwis that are keeping us, and our animals safe, this summer."

"It’s wonderful that we can help in some way.”

There were 24 charities involved, including food rescue groups across the country, the Women’s Refuge, St John's and Surf Lifesaving, city missions across our biggest centres, SPCA and Pet Refuge

Almost ten thousand Simplicity’s members voted on how to distribute the funds.

The donation round breaks down as follows:

- Women’s Refuge $126,000: After another challenging year, Women's Refuge has seen the need for their services continue to increase. While the impact of the rising cost of living has seen donations go down.

- Sixteen food rescue organisations across the country received between $8,500 -9,800 each. These hard-working organisations ensure that good food doesn't go to waste, and that it gets to the community organisations and groups supporting those most in need.

- The staff and volunteers at St John's and Surf Lifesaving will be working hard this summer to help keep Kiwis safe. They each received a donation of $36,000, which will help with training and support.

- Pet Refuge joined the SPCA New Zealand on the list this year. A donation of $33,000 each was gratefully received as these organisations reach their busiest time of year.

- The City Missions in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, who will each receive $30,000, send out thousands of food parcels and gifts. And with the help of volunteers, they put on a special festive feast for their communities.

This latest funding round brings the Foundation's total donations to $7 million.
