During the year the Simplicity Foundation provides funding to four core sectors: the environment, youth development, education, and homelessness and hunger. You can find out more about the Foundation and the charities they support here.
At Christmas, we ask our members to have their say about where the last round of donations go. The Simplicity Foundation has put together a list of great Kiwi charities to choose from. These organisations provide food, shelter and support to New Zealanders in need over the holiday period.
The Foundation will divy up the $500,000 between these charities, depending on your votes. Don't worry, no one misses out! Your vote just ensures your contribution goes to the causes you care most about.
The charities introduce themselves below.
1. North Island Food Rescue
2. South Island Food Rescue
3. City Missions (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch)
4. Animal Welfare (SPCA and Pet Refuge)
5. Summer Safety (St John and Surf Life Saving)
6. Women's Refuge
Please note: Donations to the Food Rescue North Island and South Island, as well as the City Missions, Summer Safety and Animal Welfare will be divided equally between the members of each group.

Food Rescue Northland have been operating since July 2017 and distribute to 40-50 organisations across Te Tai Tokerau. We are run by seven employees and many wonderful volunteers out of two sites, Whangārei and Moerewa, with strong support from our parent organisation, 155 Whare Awhina, and many other partners and stakeholders. We feel fortunate that we are able to do what we do, reducing food waste going to landfill and nourishing people in need. foodrescuenorthland.nz |

KiwiHarvest Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland is head office to NZs largest food rescue, with five branches around New Zealand. Our mission is quite simple: to collect good food that will otherwise be wasted and deliver it to charitable agencies around the country. Currently there is an estimated 50 million kgs of good edible food still going to waste each year in NZ at the same time, more than 1 in 7 kiwi children live in homes where food runs out sometimes or often. Our Auckland branches deliver food to over 115 charitable agencies around Auckland, from Wellsford to Pukekohe. Our focus is to assist these amazing charities to give people a much-needed hand up (as opposed to a handout). Support from Simplicity will help us to rescue and deliver food to these charities, at a time when the need is particularly great. www.kiwiharvest.org.nz |

In the last financial year to July 2022, we rescued 419365kg of food, and redistributed it to 50 charitable organisations and Free-stores in our community. www.goeco.org.nz |

Nourished for Nil is Hawkes Bay's largest established food rescue and now also operates a Foodbank service. We collect surplus and receive donated food on a daily basis from a wide range of Hawke’s Bay businesses, producers, and private donors. Distribution direct to the community is provided from four locations within Napier and Hastings, and food parcel services, previously carried out by Napier and Hastings Food Banks, are provided from two locations. We're well supported by our community and are thrilled that we can play a role in diverting food from the waste stream and instead nourish the bellies of our community. www.nourishedfornil.org |

In the North Canterbury town of Kaiapoi, there’s a little charity doing big things. Each weekday Satisfy Food Rescue and their dedicated team of volunteers tirelessly collect, sort and distribute food donated from businesses across the region - food that if not collected, would end up in landfill or as animal feed. The equivalent of 75,000 meals each month is donated to 36 organisations to feed people in need across North Canterbury. Impressive food rescue impact fact - A recent study has shown that for every $1 invested in Satisfy returns $4.50 worth of social good! www.satisfyfoodrescue.org.nz |

At Foodbank Canterbury, we provide food relief in Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru by working with partner agencies to get the right food into our communities and the families who need it the most. We know how important it is for people to have access to nutritious food, yet in the current situation of rising inflation, the rising costs of energy, fuel, groceries, rent and mortgages have put this fundamental need beyond the reach of more and more people with no respite in sight. Working with our farmers and growers, our manufacturers and distributors, our retail, wholesale and all our charity partners, Foodbank resources food to provide 284,000 meals per month. With your support, our work makes a positive difference in the lives of so many New Zealanders. www.foodbankanz.org.nz |

In its tenth anniversary year, KiwiHarvest Dunedin's mission is still beautifully simple: to collect good food that will otherwise be wasted and deliver it to shelters, food banks and community programs feeding Kiwis facing hardship. KiwiHarvest Dunedin provides an invaluable and integral free service to 30 recipients. It is under considerable pressure to meet the demand for food supply, yet so much edible food is still sent to landfills. With Simplicity Foundation Xmas funding, KiwiHarvest Dunedin would attract more food donors by implementing an ambitious “food ambulance” campaign developed by a recent Big Bloom Hackathon for Good event. www.kiwiharvest.org.nz |

Here in our KiwiHarvest Muruhiku/Invercargill Branch we are supporting just under 50 recipients with Kai/food insecurity travelling wide and far to reach all our vulnerable communities. In the recent weeks, our MSD Funding has come to end which has caused panic and unknown. If we were able to get this funding, we would utilize it by getting much needed staple grocery items and with Christmas fast approaching we know our recipients will appreciate our Awhi/support that much more. Thank you for this opportunity. www.kiwiharvest.org.nz |

In 2023, the challenges for SPCA New Zealand have been relentless. The enduring effects of COVID-19 and extreme weather events has plunged many New Zealanders into a financial crisis, exacerbating the plight of animals in need. SPCA New Zealand, amidst this turmoil, has witnessed an overwhelming 33,000 animals seeking refuge within the walls of our 29 animal centres. Within these centres we provide not only medical attention but a sanctuary brimming with love and care until we can secure them a new forever home. In times of adversity, animals often suffer in silence, forgotten and unfed. A concerning 12% increase in strays is a stark testament to this sad reality. Christmas, a season of warmth and joy, prompts a heartfelt reflection on the animals who also deserve respite and care. We say thank you for your support of SPCA New Zealand.Your contribution can provide them with the care and attention they desperately need and be a beacon of hope for those who cannot speak for themselves. www.spca.nz |

Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is a charity that’s been saving lives for over a century. Every year, its 4,500 volunteer surf lifeguards patrol over 90 beaches, from Northland to Southland, saving an average of 1,000 people from life threatening situations. SLSNZ also provides emergency search and rescue services, coastal safety assessments, public education, and beach safety programmes, making it the leading beach and coastal authority in the country. A donation from the Simplicity Foundation will help SLSNZ support and train its volunteers so they can help beachgoers return home safe and sound to their friends and whānau. www.surflifesaving.org.nz |
Unfortunately, it has been another busy year for Women’s Refuge. On average, we receive 50,000 referrals to our service each year and this year has been no different. Currently, our refuges across the country are preparing for the increase in need we routinely see over the Christmas period, and with the current financial pressures creating additional stress in homes that are already unsafe, we worry that numbers this year could be very high. It is heart wrenchingly difficult to see an increase in need over what should be a joyful time. However, we comfort ourselves in knowing that those women and children who need us will have somewhere to turn as our dedicated advocates will be working around the clock during the holidays. It takes a lot of time to achieve a violence- free life and our advocates support women across a wide spectrum of needs. Quite apart from our safe houses, this help can range from help accessing healthcare and counselling, support with MSD and budgeting advice, obtaining a protection order and legal assistance, finding a place to live, helping to fund activities for tamariki, even meeting basic needs like food, clothing, and much more. It is thanks to generous New Zealanders and organisations like the Simplicity Foundation we are able to continue this essential work. www.womensrefuge.org.nz |
