Venture Capital

We believe in investing in high-growth, homegrown startups.

Investing in home-grown startups

The Simplicity Private Equity Fund holds 12% of Icehouse Ventures Limited and invests in venture capital funds managed by Icehouse Ventures.

We target higher returns in line with the higher risks in startup companies.

Long term, we hope to have $100 million invested in New Zealand venture capital investments.

In accordance with our Responsible Investment Policy we don’t invest in startups operating in certain sectors.

A Kiwi gem with global aspirations

Most of us think of tracksuits as something we climb into on a lazy day at home or when headed to the gym. But in the fast-growing world of brand marketing and more recently brand tracking, Tracksuit is the cool new kid turning heads.

Crimson is changing lives through education

Ivy league college counselling service
Crimson Education has always aimed to be top of its class, and it's one of the successful companies backed by Icehouse Ventures Growth Fund I, which Simplicity invests in.

Frequently asked questions

Companies are typically valued according to the valuation at their last capital raise and the achievement of milestones since that time. You can see our Private Equity Valuation Policy here, which includes a summary of how Icehouse Ventures values our startup investments that it manages for us.

This depends on many factors, including the quality of companies that startup, the overall economic environment, and the time period invested in. But given the higher risk nature of startup companies, it is reasonable to assume that many will fail and a few succeed very well.

That's why our philosophy is to invest in many different startup companies via Icehouse Ventures funds.

Icehouse funds invest in line with Simplicity's Responsible Investment Policy.

To see how much of your fund is invested in to Venture Capital, look
under KiwiSaver or Investment Funds for the fund you're invested in (or interested in investing in!), and then find What this fund invests in. Venture capital investments are part of the New Zealand shares allocation.

You can also see what this would be in dollars and cents by using the Where in the world is my money? calculator on our website. Look for NZ Venture Capital Investments (65 startups) under New Zealand investments.

Or if you are a member, log in to your account and see exactly what you have invested by clicking ‘Where in the World is my money?’ on the main menu.
