Why is New Zealand so darn expensive?

It is expensive to live in New Zealand.

A recent article comparing 10 basic foods across ten countries, showed the cost of food was 50 per cent higher in New Zealand than in the UK.

In Australia, a two-year mortgage from a major bank is 3.1 per cent – but the same bank charges 5.15 per cent for the equivalent mortgage over here.

So what is going on? Why does everything cost more in New Zealand?

Yes, we are a small far-away country, but as Sam Stubbs argues, that doesn’t mean we must always accept the egregious prices we're offered.
