Christmas Giving 2024

Simplicity Foundation's
Christmas Giving 2024

During the year, the Simplicity Foundation provides funding to four core sectors: the environment, youth development, education, and homelessness and hunger.

We know the holiday period can be a tough time for many, so at Christmas the Foundation focuses on organisations providing food, shelter and support to New Zealanders in need.

This year, the Simplicity Foundation is giving a record $600,000 to the amazing charities below. As Simplicity members, you can vote for your top three causes from the following:

North Island Food Rescue

South Island Food Rescue

Whakaora Kai

Whakaora Kai - Food Rescue Northland protects the planet and strengthens communities by rescuing and sharing kai. With hubs in Whangārei, Moerewa, and Kaikohe, we operate seven days a week, rescuing surplus food from 50+ partner organisations. This food supports over 120 community groups across Te Tai Tokerau, including food banks, meal providers, Plunket, and the Māori Women’s Welfare League. We also run fruit-picking events to save nutritious produce from waste. Your generosity ensures those in need can enjoy healthy, rescued kai. Ngā mihi nui. Learn more here.

KiwiHarvest Auckland

KiwiHarvest Auckland is NZ's largest food rescue, with five branches nationwide. NZ generates over 103,000 tonnes of food waste annually, 60% of it edible, while 21% of Kiwi children face food insecurity. KiwiHarvest rescues over 200,000kg of surplus food monthly, distributing it to 119+ charitable agencies from Wellsford to Pukekohe. We support these agencies, providing a lifeline to people in crisis. With Simplicity's support, we can meet the growing demand for food assistance, reducing waste and helping those in need. Learn more here.

Fair Food

Fair Food collects surplus fresh food and prepares it to be shared with community groups across Auckland. We provide support for families trying to make ends meet. We create purpose for volunteers who give us their time and inspiration for everyone wanting to minimise food waste and greenhouse gas emissions. We create hope for those who have escaped a traumatic situation and we help provide 80,000 meals during the holidays, so no one goes hungry at Christmas time. More info here.

Go Eco Food Rescue (Kaivolution)

Go Eco Food Rescue (Kaivolution) was founded in 2014 to turn an environmental problem into a social solution.  We rescue and redistribute perfectly edible food from supermarkets, orchards, and food producers.  Instead of the food going to landfill, it feeds people in our region and reduces carbon emissions.  This year we celebrated 10 years of Food Rescue and hit a target of 3 million kgs of food distributed to charitable organisations and Free Stores in our community over this time. Love Soup

Since 2013, Love Soup has rescued 15 tons of food weekly, turning waste into nourishment for those in need. Operating in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato, we distribute food to organisations, stock Pataka Kai Pantries, and provide community meals, school lunches, and support for the homeless. We also offer clothing, toys, and essentials to help people thrive. Love Soup embodies recycling, reusing, and redistributing—with a smile. Funds raised sustain our essential operations, bringing hope to our communities. Learn more here. Thank you for supporting our mission!

The Food Basket Central Hawkes Bay

The Food Basket CHB is here for everyone! Since 2017, we've rescued and redistributed surplus food free to our community. It's a place to get, give, and share kai—lifting food security and mana. Food insecurity impacts every part of life. As a distribution hub for NZFN, we support 700+ people weekly. Diverting food from landfill reduces emissions and fills bellies. Our 40 volunteers are the heart of our work, reducing waste and building long-term food security. We’d love your support this Christmas! More info here.

Just Zilch

Just Zilch is about rescuing food, serving the community, and helping the planet. We do this by rescuing food from supermarkets, cafes, bakeries, manufacturers, producers, anywhere that food would otherwise go to waste. The food is then distributed to anyone who needs it through our free store. There is no criteria or means testing, anyone who needs food or wants to help the environment can come and get food. We also have a food hub from which we distribute food to community organisations. Since the beginning of our financial year (1 July), we have given away the equivalent of 1,469,224 meals both to individuals and community groups. More info here.

Nourished for Nil

Hawke’s Bay’s largest food rescue, Nourished for Nil collects surplus food daily from supermarkets, growers, manufacturers, and more. Operating five days a week across five venues, we provide food rescue services to the community without qualification. Additionally, we run foodbanks in Napier and Hastings and a Social Supermarket, accessible via agency referral. With over 130 active volunteers, we diverted 808 tonnes of food from landfill in 2023 and aim to reach 1,000 tonnes in 2024. Operating year-round (except Sundays and public holidays), our mission is heartfelt: reducing waste and supporting those in need. Learn more here.

That’s the equivalent of 144,430 meals worth of kai each month, provided to those who need it most. Huge thanks Simplicity members for your support of our mahi! Find out more here.

South Island Food Rescue

Kai Rescue

Kai Rescue, operated by the Nelson Environment Centre, has had an extraordinary year. Reaching 1 million kilograms of food rescued since 2017, the quantities are growing and we're now averaging 20 tonnes of food rescued every month. Not bad for one coordinator and 30+ volunteers. We partner with 55 community groups who tell us the need in our community continues to grow as many families are struggling. The funding landscape to keep operating is dwindling and we thank Simplicity and its members for this awesome opportunity. More here.

Kairos Food Rescue

Kairos Food Rescue began in 2018 with an idea. Cafe manager, Beth Hutt, was dismayed by the amount of food wasted at the end of the day in the cafe industry, and thought she might be able to do something about it. With some help and a donated shipping container, Beth rescued leftover cafe food from the tip and made it available to anyone who wanted it. Over time, Kairos grew to become a large scale food rescue organisation, rescue surplus food from farms and food wholesalers and retailers, as well as local restaurants and cafes. More info here.

Pet Refuge

Pet Refuge provides safe shelter for the often-overlooked victims of family violence: pets. Sadly, pets are frequently harmed or threatened to control family members. For many victims, their pet is a beloved confidant, making it heartbreaking that over half delay leaving abuse, fearing for their pet's safety. Pet Refuge offers temporary care, covering transport, vet care, food, and enrichment, until families and pets can reunite and start anew. This year, increased demand has led to heartbreaking waitlists, knowing even one extra day can be too late. Give the gift of safety and hope this year. Learn more here.

SPCA

SPCA cares for over 30,600 animals nationwide each year, touching the lives of 200,000 people. Behind these numbers are stories of resilience and hope—helping animals affected by domestic violence, health crises, natural disasters, and neglect. With 5,000 volunteers and foster carers, SPCA gives animals a second chance at life. Pets adopted through SPCA become family, bringing purpose and comfort to the elderly, connection to the lonely, and unconditional love to those facing challenges. Thank you for supporting SPCA. Together, we give animals the safety, love, and forever homes they deserve. Learn more here.
